মহাকালের অভিশাপ
প্রথম আষাঢ়ের ভীমবর্ষণধারা মসিকৃষ্ণ রাত্রির স্বভাবনৈসঙ্গ আপাতত বিদূরিত করিয়া চলিতেছে অবিরাম। রাঢ়ভূমের এই ক্ষুদ্র পল্লিটির নিম্ন প্রান্ত দিয়া অজয় নদের একটি ক্ষীণ ধারা বহিয়া গিয়াছে, তাহার অপর তট হইতে গহীন অরণ্যের সূচনা হইয়াছে। কিছুক্ষণ অন্তর গগনে সৌদামিনীর সুতীক্ষ্ণ কটাক্ষ প্রতীয়মান হইলে সেই ক্ষণিকের আলোয় দেখা যাইতেছে বারিধারাস্নাত বনের ভিতরে বিরাটকায় বৃক্ষরাজির অন্তরালে আত্মগোপন করিয়া সঞ্চরণশীল এক অস্পষ্ট অবয়ব— এই আঁধারেও তাহাকে মানুষ বলিয়া চেনা যায়। লোকটির পিতৃদত্ত নাম জয়চাঁদ। নানুর গ্রামে তাহার পৈতৃক জমিবাটি কিঞ্চিৎ ছিল একদা, কৃষিকার্য করিয়া ক্ষুন্নিবৃত্তি হইতো কোনোক্রমে। ডিহিদার মামুদ শরীফের অকথ্য অত্যাচারে অতিষ্ঠ হইয়া একদিন সে অসহায় অশ্রুজলে গ্রামের মাটি ভিজাইয়া সাতপুরুষের স্মৃতিবিজড়িত ভিটামাটি পরিত্যাগ করিয়া ভাগ্যান্বেষণে বাহির হইয়া পড়িল। দেশে তখন শস্যের অভাবে অজন্মাবস্থা দেখা দিয়াছে, জমিদার-ডিহিদারেদের অনমনীয় মনোভাবের কারণে সাধারণ মানুষের দুর্দশা আরও শতগুণে বর্ধিত হইয়াছে মাত্র। লোকে যখন আপন পরিবারের জন্যই দুই বেলা দুই মুঠি অন্নসংস্থান করিতে পারিতেছে না, তখন তাহার মতন একজন বাড়তি মানুষকে কে আর কাজ দিবে? আর ব্রাহ্মণসন্তান হইলেও জমিদারি দপ্তরের কাজ করিবার উপযোগী শিক্ষাদীক্ষাও তাহার নাই। ভাগ্যচক্রে সে এক নৃশংস দস্যুদলের সাথে জড়াইয়া পড়িয়াছিল কিছুকালের জন্য, ক্ষুধার জৈবিক তাড়নায় মানুষের সদবুদ্ধি ও নীতিজ্ঞান স্থির রাখা দুষ্কর হয়ে পড়ে। রাত্রিকালে তাহারা সুযোগ পাইলেই অসহায় পথিকের সর্বস্ব হরণ করিয়া লইত। এক রাত্রে দস্যুসর্দার অমার্জনীয় অপরাধ করিয়া ফেলিল। সেই রাত্রে দস্যুদল এক খর্বকায় বৃদ্ধ ব্রাহ্মণকে নির্জন পথের প্রান্তে একাকী পাইয়া তাহার হাতের পুঁটুলি কাড়িয়া লইল। ব্রাহ্মণ তখন এক অবস্থাপন্ন কায়স্থ ভক্তের গৃহে শ্রাদ্ধানুষ্ঠান সারিয়া ফিরিতেছিলেন, পুঁটুলিতে তাই চালডালকলার সাথে গুরুবিদায়ে প্রাপ্ত দুইটি টঙ্কাও ছিল। দুর্দিনের শেষ সম্বলটুকুও অপহৃত হইবার কারণে ব্রাহ্মণ প্রথমে তাহাদের দৈবের দোহাই দিয়ে সম্পত্তি প্রত্যর্পণের নিষ্ফলা অনুরোধ করিতেছিলেন, শেষে ক্ষান্ত হইয়া ক্রমাগত দস্যুদলের প্রতি সরোষে অভিসম্পাত বর্ষণ করিতে লাগিলেন। বামাচারী দস্যুসর্দারের কারণসেবনের মাত্রা সে-রাত্রে কিঞ্চিৎ অধিক হইয়া থাকিবে। সে দুইবার ব্রাহ্মণকে নিরস্ত করিবার প্রচেষ্টা করিয়া তৃতীয়বারে কাণ্ডজ্ঞান হারাইয়া তাহার হাতের খড়্গ তুলিয়া সটান বৃদ্ধের গলায় বসাইয়া দিল। চক্ষুর সম্মুখে এই হত্যাকাণ্ড অকস্মাৎ ঘটিয়া যাইতে দেখিয়া আতঙ্কে জয়চাঁদের সর্বাঙ্গ কাঁপিতে লাগিল। বাল্যকাল হতেই সে অধিক দেবদ্বিজপরায়ণ নয়, তবু আজন্মলালিত স্বাভাবিক সংস্কারবশতই সে জানে যে, ব্রহ্মহত্যা মহাপাপ। উপরন্তু থানাদারের হাতে হত্যাদায়ে ধরা পড়িলে সে হয় প্রাণদণ্ড দিবে নতুবা হাত-পা কাটিয়া লইবে। তদ্দণ্ডেই জয়চাঁদ মনে মনে স্থির করিল যে, তাহাকে এই দস্যুদল পরিত্যাগ করিয়া অবিলম্বেই পলায়ন করিতে হইবে। এই ঘটনার পরবর্তী তিন দিবস সে ওই নরহন্তা দস্যুদলের মধ্যেই কোনোক্রমে কাটাইল, দস্যুরাও প্রাণভয়ে এই দিবসগুলি বনের মাঝে তাহাদের গোপন আস্তানাতেই লুকাইয়া রহিল, শিকারের সন্ধানে রাত্রিকালে আর বাহির হয় নাই। চতুর্থ দিবসে ছিল অমাবস্যা তিথি, সেই রাত্রে তাহারা মদ্যমাংসযোগে তাহাদের আরাধ্যা শ্মশানচণ্ডীর পূজা করিল পাপক্ষালন করিতে, ভক্তদিগের মহাপ্রসাদ গ্রহণ অন্য রাত্রের তুলনায়ও গুরুতর হইল, হয়তো-বা অকারণ নরহত্যার গ্লানি ভুলিতে। মধ্যরাত্রে সকলে তখন গুরুভোজন আর মাদকসেবনের ফলস্বরূপ গভীর নিদ্রায় আচ্ছন্ন, শুধু জয়চাঁদের চক্ষেই তন্দ্রা নাই। প্রকৃতপক্ষে গত তিন দিবস ধরিয়া সে এই মুহূর্তেরই প্রতীক্ষায় ছিল। দস্যুদের গাঢ় নিদ্রা ভাঙিতে কাল বেলা প্রায় দ্বিপ্রহর গড়াইয়া যাইবে, ততক্ষণে সে ইহাদের নাগালের বাহিরে চলিয়া যাইতে নিশ্চয় সক্ষম হইবে। একবার কোনোক্রমে অজয় পার করিতে পারিলেই অপরতটে গৌরাঙ্গপুর। সেখানে পৌঁছাইতে পারিলে জীবিকার কোনো একটা উপায় হয়তো হইয়াও যাইতে পারে; প্রয়োজনে সে ভিক্ষা করিয়া দিনযাপন করিতেও প্রস্তুত, এই নরাধমেদের সংস্পর্শ হতে তাহাও অধিকতর কাম্য।
গ্রীষ্মকালের সমাপ্তি হইয়া বর্ষার সবেমাত্র আগম ঘটিয়াছে, অজয় পার হইতে তাই জয়চাঁদকে বিশেষ বেগ পাইতে হয় নাই। অরণ্যে প্রবেশ করিয়া প্রাথমিকভাবে সে কিছুটা দিশাহারা বোধ করিল। এই বন তাহার কাছে সম্পূর্ণ অপরিচিত; উপরন্তু অমাবস্যার অন্ধকারে সে বনের ভিতরে কিছুই স্পষ্টভাবে দেখিতে পারিতেছে না, শালপ্রাংশু মহাবৃক্ষেরা উদ্ধত প্রহরীর ন্যায় পথ আড়াল করিয়া দণ্ডায়মান। বনের ভিতর হিংস্র শ্বাপদকুল ব্যতীত বিষাক্ত সর্পের উপদ্রবেরও সম্ভাবনা বর্তমানে প্রবল। অন্য সময়ে সে কিছুতেই এই অবিমৃশ্যকারী সিদ্ধান্ত গ্রহণ করিত না, তবে আজ সে নিরুপায়। বনের মধ্যে ইতস্তত চলিলে পথভ্রষ্ট হওয়া অবশ্যম্ভাবী, জয়চাঁদ দিগনির্ধারণ করিয়া অনুমান করিল যে, নৈর্ঋত কোণ বরাবর চলিলে গৌরাঙ্গপুর গিয়া পৌঁছোনো উচিত, বাকিটা অদৃষ্টের হাতেই সমর্পণ করা সমীচীন। বনের মধ্যে চলিতে চলিতে অর্ধপ্রহর অতিক্রান্ত হইয়াছে, বর্ষাধারায় সিক্ত জয়চাঁদের শারীরিক দশা ক্রমেই সঙ্গিন হইয়া উঠিতেছে, বর্ষণ থামিলে না হয় সে কোনো বৃক্ষশাখায় আশ্রয়গ্রহণ করিবে রাত্রিকালের জন্য। বিদ্যুদ্দীপ্তিতে চারিপাশ একবার আলোকিত হইতেই কিয়দ্দূরে এক ভগ্ন দেউল দৃশ্যমান হইল। অগ্রপশ্চাৎ বিবেচনা না করিয়াই সে সেই উদ্দেশে ছুটিয়া গেল— এই কালরাত্রি তো আগে কাটিয়া যাক!
আশ্চর্যের বিষয় যে জনমানবশূন্য নিশাকালীন অরণ্যের অন্তঃপুরে অবস্থিত এই দেবহারা দেউলের ভিতরে দোরের অনতিদূরে দুটি প্রদীপ জ্বলিতেছিল, যদিও দেউলের প্রশস্ত অন্দরভাগ তাতে বিশেষ আলোকিত হয় নাই। এই দুর্যোগের রাত্রে পূজারিবিহীন দেবালয়ে কে জ্বালালে প্রদীপশিখা? হঠাৎ বাল্যকালে শোনা এক অলৌকিক কাহিনি জয়চাঁদের মনে পড়িয়া গেল। সে-স্মৃতি ইতস্তত বিক্ষিপ্ত, যেন ঊর্ণনাভের তন্তুর ন্যায় সূক্ষ্ম, বলপূর্বক তাহাকে একত্রিত করিতে গেলেই তাহার প্রকৃত আকার বিনষ্ট হইয়া একটি অর্থহীন পিণ্ড সৃষ্টি হইবে মাত্র। জয়চাঁদ দেউলমধ্যে একাকী বসিয়া অতি যত্নে সেই স্মৃতিকণাগুলি আহরণ করতে সচেষ্ট হইল, তার বাহ্যচেতনা কয়েকদণ্ডের জন্য প্রায় লোপ পাইল। পিতা কৃষক হইলেও তস্য পিতা অর্থাৎ জয়চাঁদের পিতামহ জীবিকায় ছিলেন সংস্কৃতজ্ঞ পুরোহিত। পূজাপাঠ-যজমানির জন্য তাহাকে বহু নিকটদূরবর্তী গ্রামে যাতায়াত করিতে হইতো নিয়মিত। এক পূর্ণচন্দ্রের রাত্রে মেটে ঘরের দাওয়ায় বসিয়া তিনি শিশু পৌত্রকে শুনাইয়াছিলেন তাহার যৌবনকালে শোনা এক অদ্ভুত কাহিনি। প্রাচীন গোপভূমের শ্যামরূপা গড়ের পথে দুর্ভেদ্য শালবনের ভিতর আছে এক দেবদেউল। কে কবে এই দেউল প্রতিষ্ঠা করিয়াছিল তাহা কেহই নিশ্চিত করিয়া বলিতে পারে না। জনশ্রুতি ইহাও রহিয়াছে যে, একদল কাঠুরে নাকি গভীর অরণ্যে কাষ্ঠ সংগ্রহ করিতে গিয়া একদা ওই দেউল আবিষ্কার করে, তাহার পূর্বদিবস অবধি নাকি একটা পোড়া ইষ্টকও সেখানে কেহ কখনো দেখে নাই, ওই দেউল নাকি এক রাত্রিমধ্যেই যেন শূন্য হইতেই গড়িয়া উঠিয়াছে। অজানা এক আতঙ্কের বশবর্তী হইয়া স্থানীয় গ্রামবাসীরা কখনই ওই দেউলের অন্দরে পদার্পণ করে নাই, তাহারাই ভয়েভক্তিতে দেউলের নামকরণ করিয়াছে মহাকালের মন্দির। মাত্র একবার এক দুর্ধর্ষ দস্যু গুপ্তধনের লালসায় একাকী ওই দেউলে প্রবেশ করিয়াছিল, তাহার শব অবধি কোনোদিন আর খুঁজিয়া পাওয়া যায় নাই। কাহিনি শুনিয়া শিশু জয়চাঁদ ভীতি আর রোমাঞ্চমিশ্রিত এক আবেশে তাহার বৃদ্ধ পিতামহকে জড়াইয়া ধরিয়াছিল, বৃদ্ধও শীর্ণ দুটি হাতে তাহার বার্ধক্যের সম্বলকে জড়াইয়া নিরাপত্তার উত্তাপ দিয়া শিশুকে আশ্বস্ত করিয়াছিলেন।
জয়চাঁদ আজ আর সেই দুর্বল ভীরু শিশুটি নাই, প্রদীপের ম্লান আলোকেও তাহার প্রশস্ত কাঁধ আর মেদবর্জিত পেশীবহুল ঊর্ধ্বভাগ দেখিলে এই ব্রাহ্মণের অপরিমিত দৈহিক বলের আভাস পাওয়া যায়। একটি পিতলের প্রদীপ হাতে তুলিয়া লইয়া এক্ষণে সে দেউলের অভ্যন্তর ঘুরিয়া দেখিতেছিল। তাহার প্রাথমিক অনুমান ভ্রান্ত প্রমাণিত হইল, এ দেউল দেবশূন্য নয়। তবে এ কেমনধারা দেবতা! দেউলের অভ্যন্তরের দক্ষিণ প্রান্তে দেওয়ালের তিন কদম পূর্বে একটি প্রস্তরনির্মিত বেদির ওপর বিগ্রহ রক্ষিত ছিল। বিগ্রহ বলিতে কৃষ্ণকায় প্রস্তরের একটি মুণ্ডমূর্তি মাত্র, তাহার মধ্যস্থলে কেবল এক জোড়া বৃহদাকার চক্ষু। জয়চাঁদ আশৈশব অসংখ্য দেবদেবীর প্রতিমা দেখিয়াছে, বিশেষত গ্রাম্য লৌকিক দেবতা অধিকাংশই আকারে ও প্রকারে কিছু বিচিত্রই হইয়া থাকেন— আজিকেও তো তাহার উপস্থিতিতেই অতিভীষণা করালদংষ্ট্রা নৃমুণ্ডমালিনী চণ্ডীর পূজা হইল— তবু এমন বীভৎস মূর্তি সে পূর্বে কখনো দেখে নাই। বিগ্রহের চক্ষুযুগল যেন পিদিমের আলোয় জ্বলজ্বল করিয়া উঠিল, পৃথিবীর সমস্ত হিংসা, ঘৃণা আর ক্রোধ যেন আসিয়া জমা হইয়াছে ওই চক্ষুর চাহনিতে; অধিকক্ষণ চাহিয়া রহিলে মাথার ভিতর কেমন ঘোর লাগিয়া যায়। সে ওই করাল দৃষ্টি হতে নজর ফিরাইবার নিমিত্ত বিগ্রহের পশ্চাতের দেওয়ালে দৃষ্টি প্রসারিত করিল। ইষ্টক দেওয়াল আসিয়া যেস্থলে প্রস্তরভূমির সাথে মিশিয়াছে সেখানে এক নাতিবৃহৎ অন্ধকার গর্ত। বিদ্যুচ্চমকের ন্যায় স্মৃতির অতলে থাকা একটি শব্দ সহসা জয়চাঁদের মস্তিষ্কে তীব্র ঠেলা দিয়া গেল— গুপ্তধন! হয়তো সেই প্রাচীন কাহিনিবর্ণিত দস্যু এখানে সত্যই গুপ্তধনের সন্ধান পাইয়াছিল, হয়তো গুপ্তধন উদ্ধার করিয়া সে রাত্রির অন্তরালে এই অঞ্চলের ত্রিসীমানা ত্যাগ করিয়াছিল, তাই তাহাকে আর খুঁজিয়া পাওয়া যায় নাই। অত্যন্ত কৌতূহলী হইয়া সে হাতের প্রদীপ তুলিয়া ধরিয়া সেই দিকে অগ্রসর হইল।
জয়চাঁদ গর্তের নিকটে গিয়া প্রদীপের আলোয় উহার গভীরতা পরীক্ষার চেষ্টা করিল। তাহাতে বিশেষ সুবিধা না করিতে পারিয়া নিজের বাম হাতটি গর্তের ভিতর ঢুকাইতে লাগিল, কিন্তু গর্তের তল পাইল না। তখন সে ভূমির ওপর শুইয়া পড়িয়া গোটা হাতটি অতি সন্তর্পণে গর্তের ভিতর প্রসারিত করিয়া দিল, এবার ভিজা মাটিতে আঙুল ঠেকিল, কোনো পেটিকা বা ঘড়া গর্তের ভিতরে নাই। জয়চাঁদ কিছু হৃতমনোবল হইল। কোনো ধনরত্ন এ-স্থলে কখনো থাকিলেও তাহা বহুপূর্বেই গিয়াছে, এক্ষণে গুপ্তধন পাইবার কোনো সম্ভাবনা নাই। তবুও কিছু চিন্তা করিয়া সে ধীরে ধীরে দেউলের অন্তঃস্থ দেওয়ালগুলি পরীক্ষণ করিতে লাগিল, যদি অন্য কোনো সূত্র মিলিয়া যায়। এতক্ষণে সে আবিষ্কার করিল যে, দেউলের অভ্যন্তরে চতুর্দিকেই দেওয়াল সংলগ্ন ভূমিতে অনেক গর্তের চিহ্ন বিদ্যমান। উত্তরপ্রান্তের দেওয়াল আর ভূমির সংযোগস্থলে একটি গর্তের পাশে এক লোহার গাঁতি পড়িয়া রয়েছে। জয়চাঁদ সেটি হাতে তুলিয়া লইল, যন্ত্রটি বহুযুগের পুরাতন বলিয়া অনুমান হয়, কালের প্রকোপে আর দীর্ঘ দিনের অব্যবহারে লৌহগাত্রে মরিচা ধরিয়াছে। এই গর্তটিও অন্যগুলির চেয়ে আকারে অনেক প্রশস্ত, জয়চাঁদ একবার গর্তের ভিতর উঁকি দিল, অজগরের করাল মুখব্যাদানের মতো সেই সর্বগ্রাসী গহ্বর যেন সামান্য মৃৎপ্রদীপের সমস্ত আলো গ্রাস করিয়া লইয়াছে। ক্ষণিকের জন্য অচেনা অশুভচেতনায় জয়চাঁদের চিত্ত চঞ্চল হইয়া উঠিল, এই কৃষ্ণগহ্বর যেন আদিম কোনো অন্ধকারের প্রতীক। প্রদীপটি গর্তের ওপরের দেওয়ালে তুলিয়া ধরিতেই দেখিল সেখানে প্রাচীন বঙ্গলিপিতে কিছু লিখিত রহিয়াছে। অন্নের তাড়নায় কৃষিজীবী হইলেও জয়চাঁদ ব্রাহ্মণসন্তান, বেদস্মৃতি অধ্যয়নের সুযোগ না ঘটিলেও সে নিতান্ত অক্ষরজ্ঞানবর্জিত নয়। অত্যন্ত মনোনিবেশ সহকারে সে কয়েকবার লিপিটি পাঠ করিয়া তাহার পাঠোদ্ধার করিতে সক্ষম হইল, তাহার অর্থ মোটামুটি স্থির করিল এইরূপ— এই দৈবী সুড়ঙ্গপথে মনুষ্যের প্রবেশ নিষিদ্ধ। ইহার অন্দরে একবার প্রবেশ করিলে দেবতার শাপে তুমি আপনজনের সুখসঙ্গ হতে চিরকালের জন্য বঞ্চিত হইবে। সাবধান। জয়চাঁদের স্মরণে আসিল সে বহুবার গ্রাম্য বৃদ্ধদের আলোচনায় শুনিয়াছে যে, প্রাচীনকালে নাকি দেববিগ্রহ এবং দেবোত্তর সম্পত্তিরক্ষার্থে বৃহৎ দেবালয়ের গর্ভগৃহে গোপন সুড়ঙ্গ থাকিত যাহা কোনো ভূনিম্নস্থ গোপন কক্ষের সাথে সংযোগ রক্ষা করিত। সংকটকালে দেবালয়ের পুরোহিত দেবতার বিগ্রহ আর ধনসম্পত্তিসমুদয় লইয়া সেই নিরাপদ কক্ষে স্থানান্তরিত করিতেন। এই মিথ্যা সতর্কতাবাণী নিশ্চিতভাবেই রত্নলোভী তস্কর হইতে সম্পদরক্ষার নিমিত্তে এই দেউলের কোনো পূজারি দ্বারা বহুকাল পূর্বে উল্লিখিত হইয়াছিল। কোনোভাবে পূর্বোক্ত দস্যু এই সুড়ঙ্গের সন্ধান পাইয়াছিল এবং সাবধানবাণী উপেক্ষা করিয়া সম্ভবত এই সুড়ঙ্গপথে সেই গোপন কক্ষেও পৌঁছাইতে সক্ষম হইয়াছিল। তাহা হইলে কোনো গুপ্তধন জয়চাঁদের খুঁজিয়া পাইবার সম্ভাবনা অতি ক্ষীণ। তবু তাহাকে যাইতে হইবে, হয়তো দস্যু গোপন কক্ষের সন্ধান পায় নাই, হয়তো সে একাকী সকল ধনসম্পদ বাহির করিয়া লইয়া যাইতে পারে নাই। আবাল্য জয়চাঁদের ঈশ্বরভীতি কিছু কম, পরবর্তী জীবনে পিতামাতাকে অকালে হারাইয়া আর বজ্রকঠিন দারিদ্র্যের নিষ্ঠুর চক্রতলে নিষ্পেষিত হইয়া আজ তাহা প্রায় লোপ পাইয়াছে। মহাকালের অভিশাপ! তাহার অধরপ্রান্তে তিক্ত হাস্যের রেখা ফুটিয়া উঠিল মুহূর্তের জন্য। সে মাথা নীচু করিয়া কয়েক দণ্ড কিছু চিন্তা করিল, তারপর ধীরে ধীরে এক হস্তে প্রদীপ লইয়া সেই অতলস্পর্শী অন্ধকার সুড়ঙ্গপথে প্রবেশ করিল।

লোকটা হঠাৎ করেই যেন মাঝগঙ্গায় ভেসে উঠল। বুকজলে ভাসতে ভাসতেই চারিদিকে তাকিয়ে বোঝার চেষ্টা করল সে এই মুহূর্তে ঠিক কোথায় আছে। মাথার ভেতরটা কেমন খালি খালি লাগছে, হাত-পাও অবশ হয়ে আসছে ক্রমশ, জলে ভাসমান অবস্থাতেই ভারসাম্য হারিয়ে ফেলে সে জলের মধ্যে নাকানিচোবানি খেল খানিকটা। নদীর কংক্রিট বাঁধানো ঘাট থেকে তাকে দেখতে পেয়ে একজন জলপ্রহরী একটানে চোখের সানগ্লাসটা খুলে ফেলে সম্পূর্ণ পোশাক পরা অবস্থাতেই জলে ঝাঁপ দিল। কয়েক মিনিটের মধ্যেই দক্ষ সাঁতারু জলপ্রহরী ওই ডুবন্ত লোকটাকে পারে এনে তুলল। প্রহরী বয়সে প্রায় যুবকই বলা চলে, উচ্চতা সামান্য কম হলেও ফর্সা চেহারায় কাটাকাটা মুখ বেশ মানিয়েছে, পরনে একটা গাঢ় নীল রঙের ইউনিফর্ম; কয়েকবার সজোরে গা ঝাড়া দিতেই ইউনিফর্ম থেকে সমস্ত জল ঝরে গিয়ে সেটা আবার শুকনো খটখটে হয়ে গেল। আগন্তুকের দীঘল ধরনের বলিষ্ঠ চেহারা, পরনে একটা খাটো সাদা ধুতি যেটা পেছনের দিকে মালকোঁচা করে বাঁধা, দেহের উপরিভাগে একটা সরু পৈতেগাছা ছাড়া আর কিছুই পরিধেয় নেই, মুখে দাড়িগোঁফের জঙ্গল। প্রহরী আগন্তুকের অবস্থা দেখে ধরেই নিল যে, এই লোক একজন বদ্ধ উন্মাদ যে জলে ডুবে আত্মহত্যা করতে গেছিল। তার ধারণা আরও দৃঢ়বদ্ধ হল আগন্তুকের প্রথম প্রশ্নে, ‘আমি কি মরিয়া স্বগ্গে গেছি? তুমি কি বাপু যমদূত, পরনে অমন বেশ কেনে?’ প্রহরী নিরাসক্ত মুখে বলল, ‘আপনি জলে ডুবে মরেন নি, বেঁচেই আছেন এবং কলকাতা নগরেই আছেন স্বশরীরে।’ ‘কলকাতা, সে আবার কোন নগর গো? কাছেপিঠে বড় নগর বলিতে তো কেবল রাজনগর। এই নগরের নাম তো পূর্বে কভু শুনি নাই। আমি এথায় আইলাম কেমনে?’ প্রহরী প্রত্যুত্তরে নিজের বামহাতের তর্জনী আর মধ্যমা একত্রিত করে চকিতবেগে আগন্তুকের ডান কানের পেছনে একটা বিশেষ স্থানে ঠেকাল। লোকটা সংজ্ঞা হারিয়ে টলে পড়ে যেতেই প্রহরী তার বলিষ্ঠ দুই হাতে লোকটার অচেতন দেহটা ধরে ফেলল। এখনই অবাঞ্ছিত আবাসনে খবর পাঠাতে হবে। নগরে উন্মাদের সংখ্যা বাড়ছে মনে হচ্ছে, তার মাত্র পাঁচ বছরের দায়িত্বকালের মধ্যেই এই নিয়ে সে সপ্তম বারের জন্য উন্মাদ দেখল স্বচক্ষে। যখন সে কোমরে বাঁধা গোলাকার বৈদ্যুতিন যন্ত্রটা মুখের সামনে ধরে অবাঞ্ছিত (সন্ধান, নিরাময় ও পুনর্চক্রীকরণ) দপ্তরে যোগাযোগ করল, তখনও চিন্তায় তার ভুরু দুটো কুঁচকেই রয়েছে।
কলকাতা নগরে অবস্থিত চারটা অবাঞ্ছিত আবাসনের মধ্যে সবচেয়ে বড়োটা হল ব্র্যাডবেরি স্ট্রিটের গামা আবাসন, যেখানে দু-জন ধূসর ইউনিফর্ম পরা প্রহরীর সতর্ক পাহারায় লোকটাকে নিয়ে যাওয়া হল, ইতিমধ্যে তার জ্ঞান ফিরে এসেছে। তিরিশ বছর আগে তৃতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের প্রকোপে পৃথিবী জুড়ে প্রবল দুর্ভিক্ষ দেখা দিলে প্রায় সব দেশই আভ্যন্তরীণ খাদ্য ও অন্যান্য প্রাকৃতিক সম্পদ রক্ষার জন্য কিছু না কিছু দৃঢ় ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করে। এ-দেশেও অপরাধী, ভবঘুরে, উন্মাদ প্রভৃতি শ্রেণির মানুষকে অবাঞ্ছিত নাগরিক ঘোষণা করে এই বিশেষ ধরনের আবাসনগুলোতে এনে রাখা হয়, এদের স্থায়ী নাগরিকত্ব লোপ পায়। অপরাধপ্রবণতা ও ভবঘুরে প্রবৃত্তিকেও রাষ্ট্র এখন মানসিক রোগ বলেই গণ্য করে। এই অবাঞ্ছিত নাগরিকদের মাথাপিছু বরাদ্দ সাধারণ নাগরিকদের তুলনায় অনেক কম হওয়ায় রাষ্ট্রের সম্পদ কিছু পরিমাণে সাশ্রয় হয়। এই আবাসনগুলোর আসল উদ্দেশ্য অবাঞ্ছিতদের মানসিক বিকারের চিকিৎসার দ্বারা সম্পূর্ণ সুস্থ করে তাদের সমাজের মূল স্রোতে ফেরানো, আর সংশোধন অযোগ্য অবাঞ্ছিতদের নিয়মিত সময়ের ব্যবধানে পুনর্চক্রীকরণ। তবে এও সত্যি যে, কাগজে-কলমে এগুলো সংশোধনাগার হলেও আজ পর্যন্ত কেউ কখনো কোনো অবাঞ্ছিত আবাসন থেকে সুস্থ হয়ে আর সমাজে ফিরতে পারেনি— দেশে যেখানে তীব্র খাদ্যসমস্যা আজও বর্তমান, সেখানে অবাঞ্ছিত কিছু মানুষকে দীর্ঘকাল বাঁচিয়ে রেখে রাষ্ট্রের কী লাভ?
লোকটা বিশাল আবাসনটার মধ্যে দিয়ে যেতে যেতে অবাক হয়ে চারিদিকে দেখছিল, কিছুই যে তার চেনা ঠেকছে না! প্রহরীদের বারেবারে প্রশ্ন করলেও তারা এযাবৎ একবারের জন্যও মুখ খোলেনি, যেন লোকটার উদ্ভট যত প্রশ্নের উত্তর দেওয়ার কোনো প্রয়োজনই কেউ বোধ করছে না, অবাঞ্ছিত লোকের আবার মানবাধিকার কী! বিশাল একটা করিডর প্রায় সম্পূর্ণ পেরিয়ে তাকে যে-ঘরটার সামনে আনা হল তার দরজার ওপরে বিরাট বোর্ডে লেখা— বিভাগ- ‘গ’। সাদা চকচকে কোনো ধাতু দিয়ে তৈরি বিশাল দরজাটা খুলে একজন প্রহরী তাকে সজোরে ঘরের ভেতরে ঠেলে দিয়েই আবার বাইরে থেকে দরজাটা বন্ধ করে দিল। ভেতরে কোনো আসবাবপত্র নেই, কেবল চারটে ছোটো খাট ঘরের চারপ্রান্তে রাখা রয়েছে। হাঁটু অবধি জোব্বা পরা এক বৃদ্ধ একটি খাটে বসে তাকে লক্ষ করছিলেন, মাথার প্রতিটা চুল সাদা হলেও তাঁর দাড়িগোঁফ কুচকুচে কালো। আগন্তুকের চোখে এই প্রথম কিছু একেবারে অচেনা ঠেকল না, বৃদ্ধের মুখ যেন বড়ো চেনা চেনা। লোকটার সাথে চোখাচোখি হতেই বৃদ্ধের চোখে কৌতুক উপচে পড়ল, ‘এস এস ভায়া। বসতে আজ্ঞা হোক। তা তোমাকে আবার কোত্থেকে তুলে আনল ওরা? গো অ্যাজ ইউ লাইক কম্পিটিশনে নাম দিয়েছিলে বুঝি?’ ‘আজ্ঞা, আপনার কথাগুলা বুঝিতে পারিতেছি না। আমিও জানি না কোথা হতে চলে আইলাম হেথায়।’ ‘হা হা হা। এদ্দিনে এরা একটা যথার্থ পাগল ধরে এনেছে দেখছি। আমাকে তো খামোখাই আটকে রেখেছে এখানে!’ ‘আমি পাগল নই ঠাকুর। তবে এ-সব অলীক কাণ্ড দেখে পাগল হইতে অধিক বাকি নাই। আপনি অনুগ্রহ করিয়া বুঝাবেন আমি কোথায় আইলাম আর আপনিই-বা কে বটে? আপনাকে পূর্বে কখনো দেখিয়াছি মনে হইছে।’ ‘আমাকে হয়ত আগে ভার্চুয়াল টিভিতে দেখে থাকতে পারো। এককালে রীতিমতো বিখ্যাত ব্যক্তি ছিলাম হে। তবে তোমাকে আগে কখনো দেখিনি বোধহয়, একবার দেখলে এই বদনখানি মনে থাকবার কথা! হা হা হা। এবার নিজের বিষয়ে কিঞ্চিৎ আলোকপাত করছি, মন দিয়ে শোনো, বহুকাল তো কথা বলবার লোক জোটে না! আমার নাম ত্রিলোক পালিত। আমি এই নগরের চাণক্য বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের একজন অধ্যাপক ছিলাম বিশ্বযুদ্ধের আগে থেকেই। বিশ্বযুদ্ধের পর রাষ্ট্র কঠোর হাতে দেশ শাসনের জন্য অনেকগুলো নতুন নিয়ম বানালো। প্রচুর পড়াশোনা করতে করতে আমি হয়তো একটু বাতিকগ্রস্তই হয়ে পড়েছিলাম, অধ্যাপকদের শেষজীবনে এ-ধরনের ঘটনা বিরল নয়। তাই কয়েক বছর আগে একদিন মাথায় একটা প্রবল সন্দেহ ঢুকল যে, রাষ্ট্রযন্ত্র সুদক্ষ দেশশাসনের নামে যে-সব নিয়ম বানাচ্ছে, যে-সব নতুন দৃঢ় ব্যবস্থা নিচ্ছে নাগরিকদের আচারব্যবহার নিয়ন্ত্রণ করতে, সে-সব কি সত্যি জনসাধারণের বৃহত্তর স্বার্থেই, নাকি অন্য কোনো গভীর গোপন উদ্দেশ্য রয়েছে এ-সবের পেছনে? এসব কথা দিনরাত ভাবতে ভাবতে একদিন আমি পাগল হয়ে গেলাম। হা হা হা। তখন এরা আমাকে ধরে বেঁধে এখানে এনে রাখল। আগামীকাল আমার পুনর্চক্রীকরণ করা হবে। প্রকৃতির মৌল উপাদান আবার প্রকৃতিতেই ফিরে যাবে সব। হা হা হা।’ লোকটা এ-সব শুনেও নিরুত্তর থাকায় বৃদ্ধ একটু উত্তেজিত হয়ে উঠলেন, ‘কি হে, রা কাড়ছ না যে বড়ো! নাকি তুমিও ওদের মতোই ভাবছ যে, আমি সত্যিই পাগল?’ ‘আপনার সকল কথার অর্থ পাইতেছি না মহাশয়। তাই চুপ করিয়া আছি।’ ‘কেন তুমি কি গোমুখ্যু নাকি? এক পাগলেই রক্ষা নেই, আকাট দোসর! নগর কলকাতায় কিছু লোক রাষ্ট্রের দমনপীড়নে আজ ঘরকুনো স্বার্থপর হয়ে গেলেও অশিক্ষিত মূর্খ তো এখানে কেউ নেই, তুমি তবে কোন পাঁকের পদ্মফুল, কও তো বাছা?’ ‘আজ্ঞা, আমার আদিনিবাস গ্রাম নানুরে। আমি রাতের বেলা মহাকাল মন্দিরের সুড়ঙ্গে সেঁধাইলাম, গর্তের মুখ দিয়ে বাহির হয়ে দেখি এক নদীতে ভাসছি। এই নগর আমার কাছে নূতন। তাই এই নগর, এই ভাষার সাথে আমি পরিচিত নই।’ ‘দাঁড়াও দাঁড়াও, তুমি কোন একটা মন্দিরের সুড়ঙ্গে ঢুকে সোজা নদীতে বেরিয়েছ? এরা যে বলে এখন নাকি সাইকোড্রিল আর বাজারে পাওয়া যাচ্ছে না! এই মন্দিরটাই-বা কোথায় পেলে? আমি তো সেই কবে ছোটোবেলায় মন্দিরটন্দির দেখেছি। পৃথিবীর সব দেশ থেকেই তো বিশ্বযুদ্ধের পর ধর্ম উঠে গেছে, মন্দিরের কথা এখন কোত্থেকে আসছে বাপু?’ ‘ধর্ম আবার কবে উঠিয়া গেছে? এই নগরে না থাক, আমাদের গ্রামে সবাই খুব ধার্মিক লোক, অনেকগুলা দেউলও আছে হোথায়। চণ্ডীদাসের ভিটাতে বাসুলি মার মন্দির দর্শনে তো অন্য গ্রামের লোকও আসে!’ ‘আরে, তুমি তো দ্বিজ চণ্ডীদাসের দেশের লোক হে! নানুর নামটা শুনেও মনে পড়েনি প্রথমে। সদাই ধেয়ানে/চাহে মেঘ-পানে/না চলে নয়ান-তারা। আহ কী সব লাইন! আজও মনে পড়ে গেলে মনে পুলক জেগে ওঠে। আসলে যুদ্ধের পর তো এ-সব বইটই বিশেষ আর পাওয়া যায় না! আর এক চণ্ডীদাস, ওই যে বড়ু চণ্ডীদাস, বোধহয় ছাতনা না কোথায় যেন—’ ‘আজ্ঞা, বড়ুই তো আমাদের গ্রামে জন্মিয়াছেন। দ্বিজ চণ্ডীদাস আবার কোন জনা?’ এবার লোকটাই বৃদ্ধের মুখের কথা শেষ করতে দিল না। ‘সেকি, সেই কব্বে প্রমাণ হয়ে গেছে যে চণ্ডীদাস নামে দুজন কবি ছিল প্রায় সাতশ বছর আগে— বড়ু আর দ্বিজ। এ-ছাড়াও এক দীন চণ্ডীদাসেরও নাম পাওয়া গেছে পরবর্তীকালে, সব মিলিয়ে এক ভজঘট ব্যাপার হে! বড়ু চণ্ডীদাসের শ্রীকৃষ্ণকীর্তন অনেক পরে আবিষ্কৃত হওয়ায় তো জানা গেল যে, পদাবলির চণ্ডীদাস আর এই চণ্ডীদাস আলাদা, বড়ু একটু বেশিই মাখোমাখো রসের। অবশ্য তুমি তো মুখ্যু লোক, তুমি আর কোত্থেকে জানবে এ-সব!’ ‘আমার গ্রামে তো প্রতি সনে ঝুলন পূর্ণিমার রাতে চণ্ডীদাসের কৃষ্ণলীলা পালা হয় গো, আমি নিজে অল্প বয়সে রাধাবেশে সে-যাত্রাপালায় ধামালি গাইছি। গ্রামে সবাই জানে বড়ু যৌবনে রসের পালা রচেছিল, বুড়া বয়সে রামী ধোবানীর পিরিতে মজে ভক্তির পদ রচে। আমি তো কিন্নাহারে বড়ুর সমাধি দেখিতে কত গেছি! সেথায় এখন এই বড় মাটির ঢিবি! আর সাতশ বছর কি কইলেন, চণ্ডীদাস তো দুইশ বছর আগেই ছিল নানুরে!’ ‘দাঁড়াও তো বাপু, আমার এবার পাগল স্কোয়ার লাগছে। তুমি যে-মন্দিরের কথা বলছিলে সেটা ঠিক কোথায় বলো তো? আর তুমি কতদিন আগে সেখানে গেছিলে?’ ‘ওই দেউল শ্যামরূপা গড়ের পথে আছে, আমি অজয় পার হয়ে কাল রাতেই হোথায় গিয়াছি— সাতুই আষাঢ়, পনেরশ ত্রিশ সন।’ ‘আচ্ছা, তুমি কি সত্যিই পাগল! এটা কত খ্রিস্টাব্দ সেটা মাথায় আছে? দু-হাজার ষাট সালে দাঁড়িয়ে তুমি পনেরশো সন বলছ?’ ‘খ্রিরিস্টাব্দের হিসাব আমার জানা নাই আজ্ঞা। আমি শকাব্দের কথা বলিতেছি।’ ‘আরে, শকাব্দের সাথে আটাত্তর যোগ করলেই তো খ্রিস্টাব্দ পাওয়া যায়। তার মানে তুমি বলছ তুমি ষোলোশো খ্রিস্টাব্দের লোক? হয় তুমি একটা সাইকোড্রিলখোর, নইলে… নইলে আমি মরার আগেই ভূতের জগতে এসে পড়েছি। তুমি কি কোনো প্রাচীন প্রেতাত্মা নাকি হে, রাম রাম রাম!’ ‘মহাশয়, আমি শপথ করিয়া বলিতেছি আমি উন্মাদ অথবা প্রেত কোনোটিই নই। আমি কেবল বুঝিতে পারিতেছি না এই স্থানে কেমনে আইলাম?’ ‘দেখো, আমার মাথায় একটা সন্দেহ ঢুকেছে। হয়তো আমি পাগল বলেই ঢুকেছে, সুস্থ মানুষের মনে এমন সন্দেহ নিজেই ঢুকতে ভয় পাবে। তোমার চোখ দেখে আমার মনে হচ্ছে না তুমি নেশাখোর আর তোমার কথা বলার ভাষাও আর্কাইক। তুমি পরিষ্কার করে বলো তো ঠিক কী হয়েছিল মন্দিরে?’
লোকটা সময় নিয়ে, যতটা পারে গুছিয়ে তার কাহিনি বিস্তারিতভাবে বৃদ্ধকে শোনালো। বৃদ্ধ এতক্ষণে একটু গম্ভীর হয়েছেন, ‘এবার তোমার কথা আমার বিশ্বাস হচ্ছে খানিকটা। এতটা বানিয়ে বলার সাধ্য তোমার নেই বোধহয়। আমি অনেক বছর আগে কোথায় যেন একটা পড়েছিলাম টাইম টানেলের কথা, এমন একটা সুড়ঙ্গ যার একপ্রান্তে যে-কাল, অন্য প্রান্ত দিয়ে বেরোলে সেই কাল বদলে যায়, এর একমুখ দিয়ে কেউ ঢুকে অন্যমুখ দিয়ে বেরোলে অন্য যুগে চলে যাবে, অথচ তার বয়স একদিনও বাড়বে না। আমার মনে হচ্ছে তোমার ওই মন্দির আসলে একটা সময়ের সুড়ঙ্গ। কে বা কারা ওই সুড়ঙ্গ বানিয়েছিল অথবা ওটা ওই জঙ্গলের মাঝে কীভাবে এল, ওই সাবধানবাণী কে লিখে রেখেছিল মন্দিরের দেওয়ালে, এ সম্বন্ধে কোনো ধারণাই করতে পারছি না। মানুষ এই জিনিসটার অস্তিত্ব আঁচ করতে পারলেও আজ পর্যন্ত এটা বানিয়ে উঠতে পারেনি। বিজ্ঞানীরা অনুমান করেছেন যে, কালের স্বাভাবিক প্রবাহ ব্যহত হলে, মানে ধরো এই যে তুমি অন্য সময় থেকে কোনোভাবে এই যুগে চলে এসেছ, এতে ইতিহাস বদলে যেতে পারে। যেমন তোমার তো এখন এখানে থাকার কথা ছিল না, তোমার হঠাৎ চলে আসার জন্য সময়ের স্রোতে যে-বদলটুকু হল, তার কারণে হয়তো চণ্ডীদাস কবি হওয়ার পরিবর্তে দস্যু হয়ে গেলেন তোমার মতো, অথবা সাতশো বছর আগে নানুরে না জন্মে দশ বছর আগে কলকাতায় জন্মালেন। সব রাষ্ট্রে তাই কড়া আইন করে এই কাল পরিবর্তন নিয়ে গবেষণা, মানে সময়ের সুড়ঙ্গজাতীয় কিছু বানানোর চেষ্টা করা বন্ধ করে দেওয়া হয়েছে। তবে কেউ কেউ শুনেছি এ-সব নিয়ে খুব গোপনে কাজ চালিয়ে যাচ্ছে। তোমার মধ্যযুগীয় মস্তিষ্কে নিশ্চয় সবটা ঢোকেনি, আমিই কি ছাই সবকিছু বুঝি এসবের! পুরো ব্যাপারটাই খুব অদ্ভুত, কিন্তু তার একটা জলজ্যান্ত প্রমাণ তো আমার চোখের সামনেই বসে রয়েছে আমার খাটের পাশে। আচ্ছা, তুমি কোনোভাবে সুড়ঙ্গটার আরেকটা মুখ দিয়ে ফিরে যেতে পারো না?’— বৃদ্ধের গলায় এখন সত্যিকারের আন্তরিকতার স্পর্শ। ‘গর্তের মুখটা তো আমি হারাইয়া ফেলেছি। আমি যে মাঝ নদীতে ভাসিয়া উঠিলাম! সুড়ঙ্গের মুখ কোথা পাইব ফিরে?’— লোকটার গলা থেকে বিষাদ ঝরে পড়ছিল। ‘ঠিকই। তবে তুমি এখানেই থাকো আপাতত। একটা গোপন কথা শোনো। এরা কয়েদিদের ধরে আনার এক বছর পরেই প্রাণে মেরে ফেলে। তবে এদের পাহারা বিশেষ কড়া নয়। তুমি সুযোগ পেলেই এখান থেকে পালাবার চেষ্টা কোরো।’ ‘আপনি তবে পলাইয়া যান নাই কেন?’— লোকটা ভীষণ অবাক হয়ে প্রশ্ন করল। ‘কোথায় পালাব এই বয়সে? নিজের চিন্তাদের থেকে তো আর পালানো যায় না! আমি একা বুড়ো মানুষ রাষ্ট্রের সাথে লড়ব কীভাবে? তাছাড়া আগেই পালিয়ে গেলে তোমার সাথে দেখা হত কি? তোমাদের গ্রামের গল্প, চণ্ডীদাসের নতুন গল্প কোথায় শুনতে পেতাম? তুমি কিন্তু আজ রাতে খাবার পরে আমায় চণ্ডীদাস নিয়ে তোমাদের গ্রামে প্রচলিত সমস্ত জনশ্রুতি শোনাবে। আমার মধ্যযুগের ইতিহাস জানতে খুব ইচ্ছে করে, জানো!’— বৃদ্ধ প্রশান্তির হাসি হাসছিলেন লোকটার দিকে তাকিয়ে।

অনিকেত একলা ঘরে বসে আকাশপাতাল ভাবছিল। পুরো ব্যাপারটা তার মাথায় ঢোকেনি, বস্তুত সে কিছুই বোঝেনি বিশেষ। কালের সুড়ঙ্গই বা কী, ওটা সেখানে এলই বা কী করে, অদৃষ্ট তাকেই বা কেন নির্বাচন করল এই অভূতপূর্ব যাত্রার জন্য, মৃত ব্রাহ্মণ কীভাবে আবার সশরীরে ফিরে এলেন এই যুগে তাকে সব বুঝিয়ে বলার জন্য— কোনোকিছুই সে বুঝতে পারেনি। শুধু তার মধ্যযুগীয় ঋজু বলিষ্ঠ দেহটা হঠাৎ সটান হয়ে গেল শিকারি বেড়ালের সতর্কতায়, শুধু তার মাথার ভেতর কে যেন বলে দিল, যেমনটা বলেছিল আরেকবার দু-দিন অথবা পাঁচশো বছর আগে, পালাও পালাও, যেমন করেই হোক পালাতে হবে। অনিকেত অথবা জয়চাঁদ অথবা লোকটা গা ঝাড়া দিয়ে খাট থেকে উঠে দাঁড়াল। সাদা দরজাটায় ধাক্কা দিল সজোরে। ভারী ধাতব পাল্লা ঈষৎ শব্দ করে খুলে গেল। দরজাটা বাইরে থেকে লাগানোই হয়নি! পালাতে গেলে হয়ত সে ধরা পরে যাবে। হয়তো একদল সশস্ত্র প্রহরী তারই জন্য অপেক্ষা করছে এই অলিন্দটার বাইরে দাঁড়িয়ে। আর এই বাড়িটা থেকে পালাতে পারলেও-বা সে কোথায় যাবে এই অপরিচিত নির্বান্ধব নগরে? উত্তর জানা নেই, তবু সে যাবে, তাকে যেতেই হবে। মহাকালের অভিশাপ! তার শুকনো ঠোঁটের কোণে একচিলতে হাসি ফুটে উঠল মুহূর্তের জন্য। সে মাথা নীচু করে কয়েক সেকেন্ড চিন্তা করল, তারপর শরীরটাকে শক্ত করে নিয়ে ধীরে ধীরে সেই জনমানবশূন্য সুদীর্ঘ করিডরে পা বাড়ালো।
